316 Stainless Steel Straps & Bands

The most commonly used and readily available stainless steel alloy in many industries, and particularly for banding and strapping, is 316 stainless steel. This type of steel is also one of the strongest and most resilient alloys, particularly when compared to 201 stainless steel. When you are deciding which alloy is ideal for your needs, it is important to weigh both the costs and benefits of each type of stainless steel to ensure that you make the best choice.

316 stainless steel basics

In order to decide on the right stainless steel alloy, it is first necessary to understand what the differences are between common options. The term “stainless steel” refers to any iron alloy that contains at least 10.5 to 11 percent chromium by mass. The addition of chromium makes iron more resistant to corrosion than normal steel, which is why it is called stainless. In addition to chromium, each alloy has differing amounts of other metal and nonmetal additives to give the alloy specific properties and make it more suited to some uses than others.

A few facts about 31 include:
  • 316 has a lower Carbon content than other types of stainless steel
  • The alloy contains Molybdenum and Nickel in addition to Chromium

Considerations for 316 stainless steel

While this alloy is very strong and resistant to corrosion, there are some limitations to keep in mind when deciding whether or not it is the right alloy for your next project:

  • Extremely high temperatures over long periods of time can lead to cracking from stress corrosion
  • Even though 316 is commonly called “marine grade,” sea water and warm temperatures will eventual wear at this type of stainless steel

Common uses

You can find 316 stainless steel used in many industries and applications because of it’s ability to stand up to extremely demanding conditions, including resistant to sulfuric, formic, and hydrochloric acids.

Some places you may see this type of strap include:
  • Welding
  • Transportation
  • Sign brackets
  • Surgical implants
  • Banding and strapping
  • Buckles
